Large power transformers differ in electrical design, cooling configuration, condition, accessory package and movement requirements. A message that says only “substation transformer for sale” does not establish whether the unit may have reuse value, whether additional testing is needed, or whether the removal cost changes the transaction. Begin with a readable nameplate, complete exterior photographs and any available drawings or equipment schedule.
Useful electrical information includes MVA rating, high- and low-voltage ratings, phase, frequency, impedance, vector group, tap-changer type and range, cooling class, basic insulation level and year of manufacture. Do not open energized or sealed equipment to obtain information. Send only records and safely obtained exterior photographs that the owner is authorized to share.
The same rating can describe very different assets. A transformer removed during a planned upgrade may present a different review than a unit removed after an internal fault, fire, impact or protection event. State what is known, what is unknown and why the equipment became available. If a unit was operating when removed, include the date and available load or maintenance history without describing it as guaranteed working.
Provide recent test reports when they exist. Common records may include turns-ratio, insulation-resistance, power-factor, winding-resistance, dissolved-gas, oil-quality or other owner-approved testing. The presence of a report does not guarantee purchase, and missing reports do not automatically disqualify a project. They tell the reviewer what evidence is available and what uncertainty remains before an offer or recovery route can be discussed.
For liquid-filled power transformers, identify the insulating fluid only from reliable records. Preserve labels, laboratory reports, maintenance documents and serial-number references. Do not infer PCB status from age, color, appearance or an undocumented statement. If the status is unknown, state that it is unknown so the project can be reviewed without a false classification.
Report visible leakage, damaged radiators, broken gauges, missing valves or evidence of fire. Do not drain, sample or transfer fluid solely to obtain a buyer review. Sampling, containment and handling decisions require qualified parties and a project-specific plan. The commercial review can begin with existing documents, photographs and an accurate description of what the owner currently knows.
A power transformer may be inside an energized substation, behind limited gate access, on a foundation with incomplete lifting clearance or separated from the road by weak ground, overhead conductors or tight turning space. Show the route from the transformer to the proposed loading point. Include gate widths, surface conditions, overhead obstructions, nearby operating equipment and any site-specific work windows.
Identify who is responsible for electrical isolation, disconnection, oil work, rigging, crane service, loading, permits and transportation. Do not assume these services are included because a buyer expresses interest. The final written scope should state the equipment included, site responsibilities, inspection or testing conditions, transport assumptions, transfer point and any documentation expected at completion.
The first review checks whether the equipment description is complete enough to compare reuse, parts, recovery and project-removal paths. The reviewer may request a missing nameplate field, additional photographs, a test report, confirmation of ownership or clarification of the release condition. This is an evaluation step, not a binding purchase or pickup commitment.
If a commercial path is available, the next communication should explain what equipment is included, what conditions remain, who performs each project task and how scheduling would proceed. If the unit is not a fit, an honest decline is more useful than an unsupported promise. Submit the available facts once, keep records organized by serial number and wait for a written scope before arranging irreversible work.
